„Because you know that this is intended, that this is man-made. The EU and Greece had more than 8 months to prepare for the next winter. They have chosen to build fences instead. And this is when you lose your temper, when you want to join their protests, when you want to scream along their side: Fuck the EU. You hypocrites. Your human rights are not worth a damn.“

Full comment by Gerhild Salzer: <More than two weeks have past already since I came back to work again in the refugee camp of #Softex. It’s my fourth time in Greece now this year and this time I will stay for more than three months.

You would think that after so many times you got used to it. Used to see people live in such dire conditions, used to watch children becoming wild and feral because they don’t get any education or attention and are bored out of their minds, used to observe women getting more and more apathetic cause they lost all their hopes, used to see people loosing their minds because they just can’t bear to live in this limbo of uncertainty, false promises and enforced idleness anymore.

And a little you did, a little you got used, you don’t want to start crying every time you enter the camp anymore. But sometimes it hits you again out of the blue. When you’re driving in your car, laughing about stupid things with your colleagues and suddenly you see the camp and people in yet another line for distribution and you’re reminded so bitterly of the difference between their lifes and your life. When you see children playing with empty boxes and orange peelings because that’s the only thing they got to play with. When you tell people yet ashamed where you come from and they always start to smile and say „Ah, Austria is a good country“ and you want to scream out loud, yes, but only for us, not for you, they would send you back to Croatia, Hungary or wherever they can to, cause they don’t care about you, they don’t care about your family, they don’t care if you are safe in your country or not, they just want you to stay where you are, even if you die slowly from the inside in a place like this.

And when it rains again, when within an hour the whole camp is drowning, all the tents are flooded, even the ones inside the filthy building, when you see people trying to fight the mud and the water, when you know that they will have to go to sleep wet and soaked only because we decided that they have to – then all your serenity has gone in a second. You are as speechless and taken aback as you were when you first stepped into a rain-drenched Idomeni back in March. Because you know that this is intended, that this is man-made. The EU and Greece had more than 8 months to prepare for the next winter. They have chosen to build fences instead. And this is when you lose your temper, when you want to join their protests, when you want to scream along their side: Fuck the EU. You hypocrites. Your human rights are not worth a damn.>
