2,300 migrants rescued on Mediterranean, Sept 9th 2016
Boat people on the Mediterranean: Less arrive, more die.
EU’s sea borders have grown even deadlier from 2015 to 2016. Those who can’t take the Balkan route any more since it was closed by the EU (lead by Austrian minister Sebastian Kurz) try to enter through the sea. EU blaims smugglers for deadly risks at borders, meanwhile destroys refugee boats.
But: NGO’s and cargo ships join forces to rescue boat refugees. The Italian Coast Guard, who coordinated the latest operation, reported that about 2,300 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast on Friday.
„Up to 7 September, the estimated 3,198 Mediterranean deaths are over 630 more than the 2,656 recorded between 1 January and 31 August 2015. This indicates that while total arrivals are now lower than they were at this time last year, the number of reported deaths is significantly higher, says the report.“
